Bowel problems and travel

Most people experience disturbance of their bowels when they travel, usually related to a change in diet or water, jet lag, a change of climate, or stress. Bacterial or viral infection, parasites (for instance, a single-celled protozoan called Giardia lamblia) and food poisoning often cause acute diarrhoea.

To avoid infection:

  • Don't drink the water if you suspect it is contaminated, and never have ice in your drinks.
  • Don't eat food that has been left out.
  • Avoid salads.
  • Be scrupulous about personal hygiene.
  • Use antibacterial handwipes.
