The main causes of erection problems

There are two main causes: physiological and psychological. Some 80 per cent of cases are primarily physiological.

The main physical causes:

  • Inadequate blood flow to the penis because of furred-up or damaged arteries. This causes about 40 per cent of impotence cases in men aged over 50.
  • Diabetes.
  • The side-effect of some prescribed drugs.
  • Smoking.
  • Excessive drinking.
  • Prostate gland surgery.

The main psychological causes:

  • Relationship conflicts.
  • Stress and anxiety.
  • Depression.

If a man has erections during sleep, or wakes up with one, there is a good chance that his ED has psychological causes.
