Narcolepsy
If you have this very rare condition you can fall asleep at any time, even in adrenaline-surging situations such as during sex or while driving a fast car. Narcolepsy is thought to be a disorder of the central nervous system and it may be genetically determined. It is often brought on by stress and tends to be worse among young adults. No amount of sleep at night can stop the overwhelming sleepiness and instant paralysis that can strike during the day.
Ask your doctor to refer you to a sleep disorders clinic if you:
- fall asleep at inappropriate times during the day, despite having had a good night's sleep;
- suddenly become weak, or collapse with surprise, shock or anger;
- are briefly unable to move while falling asleep or waking up.
There is no cure for the condition but symptoms can be controlled with nervous system stimulants and you can lead an almost normal life.
