What's the best cure for a hangover?

  • Water – most of the problems of a hangover are caused by dehydration. Rosemary and peppermint teas are a tasty alternative, and fruit juice can help process any remaining alcohol more quickly and also replace lost nutrients, especially vitamin C.
  • Paracetamol – it's the most effective type of pain relief for headaches, and it irritates the stomach less than aspirin. But beware of an overdose: morning-after hangover cures can contain large doses of paracetamol, so always read the packet carefully.

In general, the darker the drink the greater the risk of a hangover, since darker drinks contain more congeners (a secondary product of alcohol fermentation).

Reduce the risk of a hangover by eating before you drink, and by drinking at least a pint of water before going to sleep
