Charles Kennedy shows courage

We don't write about politicians very often on malehealth and we're certainly not party political. But Charles Kennedy deserves a pat on the back for admitting to his drink problem.

Jim Pollard, editor of malehealth says: 'Whatever his political reasons for going public about it, admitting to yourself that you have a drink problem is a difficult and brave thing to do. It is also the essential first step to recovery.

<'The truth is that if you have a drink problem, you're in good company. Some of most successful and talented people are alcoholics. Footballers George Best and Paul Gascoigne you can read about here and there are many others in all walks of life. Alcoholism is a disease than can hit anyone. Kennedy is far from the first politician to have a problem with booze. His bravery in becoming one of the first to admit it deserves our support.'

The chief executive of the Men's Health Forum Peter Baker says: 'Many men have serious drink problems but are unable to admit it to themselves or others and are often very reluctant to seek professional help. I hope that Charles Kennedy's actions will both increase public awareness of alcohol misuse and to encourage other men to take action to reduce their drinking and improve their health and wellbeing.'

Support for anyone with a drink problem is available from Alcoholics Anonymous, Alcohol Concern and Drinkline (0800 917 8282).
