Seven million have prediabetes, say charity

An estimated seven million adults in the UK have what charity Diabetes UK call prediabetes, a condition which means they are up to FIFTEEN times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.

diabetes symptomsPrediabetes, also known as Impaired Glucose Regulation (IGR)4, is seldom diagnosed. People with the condition have blood glucose (sugar) levels higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. (The symptoms of Type 2 diabetes are listed on the right.)

But prediabetes can still be dangerous. Diabetes UK say that recent research suggests prediabetes may already be causing long-term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system.

Many people with prediabetes are overweight or obese with a family history of prediabetes or have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Crucially, say Diabetes UK, prediabetes can often be reversed and the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes reduced by 60% just by losing a little weight, improving diet and taking a little exercise.

Steve RedgraveThe publication of these prediabetes figures coincides with the launch of Diabetes UK’s Get Serious campaign which is backed by celebrities like Sir Steve Redgrave, right. Among the campaign’s aims is to highlight the serious potential risks of prediabetes and help those affected avoid progression to Type 2 diabetes.

Risk factors for prediabetes

If you are white and over 40 years old, or if you’re black or south Asian and over 25 years old and have one or more of the following risk factors, then you may be at risk of prediabetes:

  • A close member of your family has Type 2 diabetes (parent, brother or sister)
  • You’re overweight or your waist is 37 inches or over for men (31.5 inches for women; 35 inches for South Asian men)
  • You have high blood pressure or you’ve had a heart attack or a stroke
  • You have severe mental health problems.

The more risk factors that apply, the greater the risk of prediabetes.

To sign up to the campaign or find out more, visit the Get Serious website or text SERIOUS to 84383.
